Massage Services

Ever have a day when something feels a little off?  Sometimes our bodies remind us to care for them, and the longer we delay the louder those messages get.

Living in a healthy, comfortable space is a constant balancing act between use, rest/repair, and maintenance.  This is true whether that space is your work desk, home, or body.  That can be challenging--it does take work!

My goal in every massage session is to deliver you to a state of better balance.  This may change as your physical, emotional and mental needs change.  It begins with a brief interview to assess client goals for the session.  Services are generally a mix of modalities based on the state and responses of the tissues themselves, combined with your input.

Kinesio Taping

You may have seen this colorful tape on Olympic athletes--or you may have already tried it.  When properly applied, it really does serve a clinical or performance purpose!  In fact, there is probably an application to help you with something you are experiencing.  The benefits listed above just scratch the surface; if you're curious be sure to ask.

Kinesio Taping Association International (KTAI) recognizes Amy as a Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioner (CKTP).
Dr. Kenzo Kase founder of the KTAI and inventor of the original kinesio tape (Kinesio Tex), invented this tape as a non-invasive way to send his touch home with his patients.  Benefits of Kinesio Taping can include:

- Pain relief
- Reduction of swelling or inflammation
- Muscle facilitation or inhibition
- Re-educate the neuromuscular system
- Prevent injury
- Optimize performance

Sports/Deep Tissue/Myofascial Techniques

Massage services can help restore balance by facilitating release of muscle waste after use, speeding recovery, and bringing awareness to postural or mechanical imbalances.  Everyone has these imbalances, but attention to the body's overall structure can prevent or reduce injury as well as speed healing.

Deep tissue:  this technique is focused on individual muscles and layers of muscles.  This contrasts from Swedish massage which is focused on overall relaxation and circulation.  If you have an active body you likely have some targeted muscles that repeatedly develop overuse patterns and tension.  Targeted release of these muscles can ease these aches and pains.

Sports Massage:  in my annual work with cyclists on the AIDS/Life Cycle (545 miles from SF to LA in one week), I have to release a lot of overworked and overtired muscles, speed recovery and give what help I can to returning the body to a more balanced state when the client gets back on the bike.   Good Sports technique can be used to help prep you for exertion or events, and it can also help speed your recovery--so you are able to meet your physical goals better with even shorter rest times between.   This is done through a variety of techniques:  flushing the muscles of waste products, assisted stretching, trigger point release, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) techniques, fascial scraping, and kinesio taping.  The overall goals of the client and state of their body determines which tools and techniques I use.

Kinesio Taping:  see below for more information.  The applicaiton of tape can relieve pain and improve performance during events--come get a taping of your problem areas before your next race/ride/game!  It can also be used to prevent injury through improved muscle mechanics and reduce swelling that can come from overuse or injury.  Tape can also be used to speed recovery from any injury or surgery by supporting muscles and removing bruising, edema and swelling.  It has also been proven to prevent and reduce scar tissue.  There is no medication in the tape and it is completely hypoallergenic.  Your doctor may be unaware of the benefits--or the fact that proper taping will do no harm.  Put me in touch with your medical team, and I will work with them to assure you great end results, fast recovery and a reduction in pain without drugs.

Myofascial Release:  the body is primarily composed of fascia.  This coating of tissue wraps every bone allowing the muscles to attach, each muscle fiber, each muscle, each muscle group and indeed the whole body are wrapped in this touch, shiny wrapping below the skin.  Fascia wraps, connects and separates the mechanical aspects of the muscles.  It doesn't give like muscle, but it can be tightened through exertion, rapid muscle growth, weight gain, development of scar tissue or chronic posture imbalances.  I use the principles of Tom Myer's Anatomy Trains to release fascial restrictions and ease clients back to better overall body balance.  By releasing areas of fascial restriction, the body can return to healthier posture, which results in more efficient use of muscles and less pain.
